WISE Welcome Meeting 2026

WISE Welcome Meeting 2026

📅 When: 24–25 August 2026

📍 Where: Vildmarkshotellet, Kolmården

👥 Participants: All new members of the WISE Community and invited guests

🗓️ Registration closed.

All invited participants will receive a personal registration link via email.

The WISE Welcome Meeting is a dedicated event for newcomers to the WISE Community, bringing new members together for the first time to connect, learn, and be inspired. Over two engaging days, participants will get to know one another and explore what it means to be part of the WISE Community.

The meeting provides an introduction to the WISE program, its vision, structure, and research areas, as well as its wide range of research school activities, including courses, summer schools, and study trips. The program also features inspiring talks by invited speakers from industry and the WISE Research Arenas (WIRAs), offering a valuable opportunity to build connections across universities and disciplines.

This year’s meeting will take place at Vildmarkshotellet in Kolmården, beautifully located next to the zoo and surrounded by nature. The setting offers the perfect combination of focus and relaxation, making it easy to meet new colleagues and exchange ideas.

The program will feature presentations from WISE researchers and coordinators, interactive poster sessions highlighting new projects and ideas, and, of course, a social activity in Kolmården Wildlife Park, giving participants a chance to connect in a more informal and inspiring environment.

A key highlight of the meeting is the oral pitches and poster sessions, where new PhD students and postdocs present their planned research projects. This is an excellent opportunity to share your ideas and early project outlines, connect with fellow participants, and start building collaborations within the WISE network. Please note that this is not an evaluation, but a chance to introduce yourself and your upcoming work.

Attendance is expected for all new PhD students and postdocs, as the Welcome Meeting ensures you receive essential information to make the most of your time at WISE. We highly encourage you to attend as early as possible to get a comprehensive overview of the program and to take your first steps into the broader WISE Community.

This event page will be continuously updated, so please make sure to check back regularly.

Poster Session

All WISE projects are expected to participate in the poster session.

What to prepare

A poster (or posters) presenting your WISE project(s).

Poster Guidelines

We suggest that your poster briefly include the following sections:

  • Introduction
  • Research Plan
  • Relevance for Sustainability

The poster session is a great opportunity to share your research ideas, plans, and early project outlines. Please note that this is not a performance evaluation – the aim is to introduce yourself and your upcoming work. It’s also a chance to learn from fellow participants, exchange ideas, and begin building connections and collaborations within the WISE community.

General information on how to prepare your poster and files

You choose whether you want to present your poster yourself or together with your PI.

  • If you have multiple WISE projects (or multiple students through a WISE Fellowship), you can/should submit multiple posters.
  • In the case of WISE Fellows, only submit posters for PhD or postdoc projects that you've started/recruited.
  • Please include your WISE project title and make sure your name is clearly visible.
  • You must include the full WISE logo (with “Wallenberg Initiative Materials Science for Sustainability” spelled out)  and the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation logo somewhere on the poster. Logos are available here.
  • In the case of WISE-ip industry projects, please also include the name of your industry co-applicant.
  • Please save each poster as PDF (max. file size 10 MB, you may need to play with compression or export as bitmap image if your poster contains many high-resolution images).
  • See just below for important guidelines on naming your PDF file(s).
  • Poster format: standing/portrait A1 format, i.e., width 594 mm and height 841 mm.
  • We will prepare a poster catalog on the WISE intranet including all posters, like the catalog for the Welcome Meeting 2024.
  • You need to print your poster and bring it with you, as we have no possibility to print posters locally.
  • We will supply the material necessary for hanging posters (pins, tape, etc)

Important guidelines on PDF file naming

To help us categorize your poster in the poster catalog, it’s important that you name your PDF file(s) according to these rules.

Give each poster PDF file the following name:

PI-Firstname_PI-Lastname_University_[CODE]_[MATRIX-COORDINATE].pdf

where CODE refers to the project type:

  • CODE = f1 for a project funded through a WISE fellowship
  • CODE = ap1 for a project funded in the 1st academic call
  • CODE = ip1 for a project funded in the 1st industry call
  • CODE = ww1 for a project funded in the 1st WASP-WISE call
  • …and MATRIX-COORDINATE refers to the project's primary coordinates on the WISE Matrix (see wise-materials.org/research/ for reference) in the form a1, d3, e4, etc.

If you have multiple posters with the same CODE, use, e.g., f1a, f1b, or ap1a, ap1b

For example:

  • Marie_Curie_Uppsala_ap1a_a1.pdf
  • Alfons_Åberg_LiU_f1b_d3.pdf
  • William_Gibson_Lund_ww1_e4.pdf

Poster Pitch Program (1-minute poster presentations)

As part of the poster session, each poster presenter will also take part in the poster pitch program. This includes a short oral presentation on stage, where you will pitch your poster in under one minute to encourage attendees to visit your poster during the scheduled poster session.

There will be three poster pitch sessions on the first day. Please view the pitch program on site to see which session you are expected to participate in.

Deadline

Submission closes on Thursday, August 6 at 2:00 PM.
