WISE invites you to take part in an inspiring four-day study trip to Stockholm. Together we will visit leading research and innovation environments, meet experts from academia and industry, and explore how science and technology can shape a sustainable future.
The program includes visits to Midsummer, KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm University, and Syvab, offering unique insights into cutting-edge research, innovation, and practical applications in materials science and sustainability.
đź“© Registration is open only to WISE PhD students and WISE Postdocs who have received a personal invitation by email.
If you have not received a personal invitation, please contact the WISE Programme Office at info@wise-materials.org, and we will send you one.
Throughout the trip, each visit will highlight a different perspective – from pioneering clean-tech companies to world-leading academic research and large-scale industrial solutions. Together, they create a rich and inspiring program that combines knowledge, networking, and new opportunities for collaboration.
👇 Below you can read more about the different places we will visit during the study trip.
Midsummer is a Swedish clean-tech company and one of the world’s leading developers of thin film solar cells. With their proprietary technology based on CIGS (copper, indium, gallium, selenide), they produce flexible, lightweight solar panels that have up to 90% lower carbon footprint compared to traditional silicon-based panels.
Their products are designed to be seamlessly integrated into roofs and building structures, making solar energy more accessible without compromising on aesthetics or functionality. By combining advanced materials science with sustainable production methods, Midsummer contributes to reducing COâ‚‚ emissions while driving the transition towards renewable energy.
The company’s solutions are already being implemented in Sweden and internationally, offering a tangible example of how innovative materials research can be transformed into real-world applications for a sustainable future.
During the visit to KTH Royal Institute of Technology, participants will get to explore the vibrant research environment at the Chemistry Department, where cutting-edge science is shaping the future of materials and sustainability.
The group will also meet with KTH Innovation, the university’s center for entrepreneurship and idea development, and take part in a networking session.
The day concludes with a visit to Novatron, a company closely connected to KTH, which exemplifies how academic research can be transformed into innovative technology solutions.
Together, these activities provide a unique insight into how KTH combines academic excellence, innovation support, and industry collaboration to drive scientific discoveries towards real-world applications.
At Stockholm University’s Department of Chemistry, participants will be welcomed into a strong academic environment where groundbreaking research connects directly to global challenges in sustainability and materials science.
The study visit is designed to provide an in-depth look at ongoing projects within the department and to meet researchers who are pushing the boundaries of knowledge in their fields. With opportunities for discussion and exchange, the visit will highlight how SU’s expertise contributes both to academic excellence and to solutions with real-world impact.
This day at Stockholm University offers a valuable perspective on how advanced research and collaboration can pave the way towards a more sustainable future.
At Syvab’s Himmerfjärdsverket, one of Sweden’s largest wastewater treatment plants, participants will gain unique insights into how advanced technology and large-scale operations contribute to cleaner water and a more sustainable environment.
The visit includes both a presentation and a guided tour of the facility, showcasing ongoing projects and future-oriented solutions in wastewater management. With connections to cutting-edge research in water purification, the visit highlights how collaboration between industry and academia can address some of today’s most pressing environmental challenges.
By exploring Syvab’s work, participants will see how innovative approaches in water treatment are essential for building a sustainable society.
