HOST CITY TURKU

Turku is located on Finland’s southwest coast, about 170 km from Helsinki. Founded in the 13th century and first mentioned in 1229, it is the oldest city in Finland and served as the country’s former capital. Today, Turku is a vibrant centre of culture, science and innovation, with a historic atmosphere, a lively university community and an active cultural scene. With a population of around 206,000 residents (over 300,000 in the wider Turku region), it is the sixth largest city in Finland.

Situated along the scenic Aura River and close to the beautiful Archipelago Sea, Turku offers visitors a unique combination of Nordic nature, maritime heritage and urban charm. Whether you have a few free hours after a meeting day or plan to stay longer, there is plenty to explore in the city and its surroundings.

As Finland’s oldest city, Turku is a home to historical sites such as Turku Castle, a medieval fortress dating back to the 13th century, and Turku Cathedral, one of the country’s most important landmarks. The Aura River runs through the heart of the city and is often described as Turku’s “living room”. The riverside is popular place to walk, with cafés, restaurants, museums and historic ships along the banks. For a dose of culture, Turku offers several museums and galleries showcasing art, history and maritime heritage. Just outside the city lies the beautiful Turku Archipelago (Saaristo), one of the largest island archipelagos in the world. Its stunning landscapes and rich cultural heritage can be easily explored by bicycle, bus or car, with short ferry crossings connecting the islands.
